Looks like a flowering quince to me, definitely something in the Rosaceae.
Was the fruit golf ball-sized or slightly larger, lumpy, green/yellow, hard
and sour?
There are apparently many species and cultivars of flowering quinces, and
it seems they range from eastern europe to china and japan.

z5 se MI where that late frost really got me angry. What a bummer. My kiwis
and mulberries and apricots were looking awesome, and now probably nothing
this year.
