Jay,I found the flier that Richard Fahey printed up when he first offered the
cherry hawthorn, and it doesn't say what species it is. Hawthorns being the
promiscuous characters that they are, there's a good chance that nobody knows
which species went into it. But if the Kansas species that you found has
good fruit, you may as well run with it. Muffy BarrettSouthern WI, where
we've gotten enough rain that the grass isn't crunching (much) anymore.

Jay,
Richard Fahey, of the Christian Homesteading Movement (or similar moniker),
in Oxford, NY (I think) wrote about his 'cherry hawthorn' selection, in
NAFEX, a number of years ago, and was offering scionwood and seed from that
selection - which, to the best of my recollection was just a random
discovery of unknown origin that he selected out of a public landscape
planting somewhere in his vicinity.

I got a plant called a "cherry hawthorn" a few years back. I'm sorry I don't
the name of the man I got it from. Maybe he's on the list. I recently tasted
a fruit from the Kansas hawthorn, C. coccinioides, and am wondering if that
was one of the parents that was used in coming up with the cherry hawthorn.
I thought the Kansas fruit was pretty tasty for a hawthorn.
Anyone have any clues?

Jay

Here's what I've found out so far. I talked to Rolling River Nursery,
which carries Richard's Cherry Hawthorn. The guy I talked to felt that
it came from an unknown tree that Richard found.
I personally tasted a fruit from Kansas hawthorn and found it real tasty
(for a hawthorn). The guy at Rolling River recommended a variety called
Lavalle, as being the one that he thinks tastes the best. So maybe I'll
give that a try.
