I have read that people used to look for elderberry plants when trying
to decide where to dig a well because elderberries grow where water is
within 10 feet of the surface.

Subject: Re: [nafex] where to plant elderberries?
We have elderberries growing wild around the farm. Most are along the
edges of buildings where birds roost. They do well with damp (not
soggy) soil. Ours can get very weedy and require hacking down.
