To the List:
Had I expected this I might have waited to make the fall report today. Today,
3rd November, I tested my friend's Winesaps and found a Brix of 15. Despite
(because of?) about ten nights of frost in the past three weeks they were in
excellent shape. I detect just a bit of water core. We stripped the tree and
got about half as many bags as last year. Apparently its biennial tendency is
not as pronounced as I had feared.Early this summer I thinned the fruitlets
and pruned a third of the upright growth and crossed branches. The result was
heartening: nice size and color.
This came as a bit of surprise as warm weather came fully a month late this
year. Many thought a late ripening apple such as Winesap would not ripen this
year. Nice to find good news.
