Perhaps the McIntosh started fruiting, or came to notice in some way in
1811, but John McIntosh found the original tree near the ruins of an old
cabin and transplanted it to his homestead (along with some others which
did not survive) in 1796.
The family sold seedling trees until the 1830s when they acquired a
hired man who knew how to graft.
