I'd like to grow a Hovenia dulcis (Japanese raisin tree) as an over story
tree; once it towers over the 15' or 20' trees (these are saplings but will
be that tall, and the Hovenia can keep up), it will have full sunlight - the
site is characterized by good moisture, which it needs.
Will this work, or will the Hovenia die out due to turf competition?
I've tried the fruit-stems of one - tasted extremely astringent like an
under-ripe persimmon; maybe I should top-graft it with one that someone says
tastes great.
Thanks,
Steve
