A romantic explanation but not very likely in fact.
The dark color and texture of the prairie soils is typical of chernozem. The
natives would not have been burning the prairies, especially large areas, as
they were not agriculturists. Most prairie fires were naturally started by
lightning as are most wildfires even today.
