Here's some valuable info from Harvey:Mold will certainly render the seed incapable of germination. You have to kill the mold with bleach or a fungicide.Perhaps too much moisture in the peat, or should have sterilized it first.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chestnuts freeze at about -3C to -4C so I refrigerate them at -0C to -1C and they hold up well. I first cool them down in mesh bags to allow the condensation to evaporate and them place them into plastic bags, poking some holes in the plastic bags to allow some air exchange since they will still use up oxygen due to transpiration. Elevated CO2 levels helps reduce mold but excessive levels will create an off flavor and O2 levels below 4% will kill the nut embryo, and the nut will then degrade.
Best wishes,
