Where are you located steve? What soil type? We have a poncirus here on red shale that has almost totally died back. That would be a bummer to have your whole fence die just as it reaches maturity. A neat but time consuming proposition would be to lay the hedge much like they do in England with mostly hazel. Cutting the branches 90% of the way through and weaving them over produces new growth, suckers upwards and thick protection as high as you like (although it would take years to get all of this established and i am not sure hazel would be the best choice for jersey. maybe it would work with something else fast growing and seemingly indestuctible like mulberry?
