I would look at the CRFG site for ideas. Their annual meeting in is the week of Aug14th. Maybe a little late to alter you travel plans, but they have really good meeting. look at there meeting schedule to get some ideas on place to go
The last time I went I had fun at the Fullerton arboretum (thats more toward LA). Lots of fruit trees there Roger Meyer orchard is not to far from there if you interested in Jujubes Encanto farms is great place for figs and bananas..few other things too Ben & Mary Poirier nursery was nice
too. they might fix you up with one of their tropical fruit drinks! yum! There were a few other nurseries down there I visited that I cant remember that were nice too. I think it is best to contact someone in the local chapter to hook you up. There are MANY places to visit

Going there for vacation at the end of August.
Can anybody point to interesting fruit-related places, activities? For example, fruit tasting, interesting nurseries, PYO of exotic (as for New England) fruit.
Which fruits are in season that time of the year?
I already scanned travel guides and know about Chinese, Japanese gardens, farm markets, wine tasting. I also know that Knott's Berry Farm does not have much to do with berries these days ;-)
I'll be there with little kids, so won't be able to go too far.
