In
zone 2, Saskatoon Saskatchewan we’ve been using Ottawa 3 but found it susceptible
to fireblight in 2008 and 2009. Bud
9 and Ottawa 8 were our next best choices. We
are trying some Bud 9 x Ottawa 3 seedlings that we made and have screened some
for fireblight resistance but the lines are to young to know if they will be
dwarfing. The
first 2 years are crucial, after that we tend not to have winterkill with dwarfing
rootstocks. We suspect that it is our hardy scion varieties that are
carrying the borderline hardy rootstocks. We’ve
been growing the ‘V’ series which has been surviving above the snow
line in winter for 2 winters. By that I mean letting the rootstocks grow into trees
by themselves. But only this season did we get permission to propagate and test
them on our varieties. Dr.
