I don't see any advantage to using hawthorn as a rootstock,
except where drought tolerance is needed.
Apparently hawthorn has a very deep root system.
My grafts were placed high (12 feet) into the crown of a mature C.oxycantha "Paul's Scarlet" becuz I had no other suitable rootstock available.
Results might be different if grafts were placed near ground level.
Medlar is doing well on the hawthorn!
One could also try using an interstem of one species or another.
