Dr Natelson,
I enjoyed your pear report and nice to hear from you. It's been a long time since I've seen much of you(except the last SFF meeting). Are you planning on attending the SFF meeting in Abbeville?
I have several trees of Bartlett in different strains(last time I looked). I had Red Bartlett, regular Bartlett, and some I don't recall. Some of them didn't produce much some years. Others produced pretty well some years, but fruit was poor quality. Tenn does pretty well most years, but not all. We probably get 200 chill hours more here than you do in Houston area. Chill, for the most part I'd say, is not a big factor here in low production--although it does have some effect. We have RLB that affects pear quite a bit causing dieback. Most of my trees I grafted onto Calleryana about the early 1980's. Many came from the Southern Oregon Experiment Station.
Kind Regards,
Richard Harrison, NW FL
