Apples and walnuts can be spaced much closer if you plant a tree legume in between. Eleagnus may work as well.

Pears and quince roots they might be grafted on get along just fine with walnuts. Of course if the walnut tree was simply very big and blocked out light or took up all the water and nutrients, that's a different matter. Apple and blueberries on the other hand, need to be a good 70 ft from any large walnut tree. Donna
