I'm pretty sure there's a lot of different answers to your question, but my answer goes like this. Figs are fast growing, I always prefer the smaller plants to the larger ones, both because you save money & mostly because you can train it to whatever your space requirements are. For zone 4 US one of the best tips I can think of is pinching all new growth after the 4th leaf, to prevent excessive growth & force the plant into sizing up the existing baby figs. It also results in a much more compact plant. Especially if you're gonna grow it in indoor light part of the year, figs get leggy & out of proportion quickly. As for varieties, that's again very personal, of the ones you list I've had most luck with Kadota, tho I would high recommend Conadria & Petit Negri for good size figs. Hardy Chicago is prolific but the figs are very small & not so sweet & succulent .... I'm not familiar with Canadian suppliers so I can't help you there.& If you want to get up to speed quickly with the world of figs the GardenWeb fig forum is great fun, way too much information & lotsa helpful people including many who trade cuttings.~mIEKAL<< 2.dat >>

I am contemplating purchasing a fig to grow in a container and overwinter in my garage. Can anyone recommend any particular varieties (and their suppliers in Canada), and suggest what size container would be appropriate (I have seen 15 inch suggested but it seems very small to me). Varieties I have seen from one source include Honey, Black Mission, Negronne and Kadota, but I have no experience so don't know which would be best. Thanks,CarenQuebec
