Yes, it is true that spring grafting of peaches isn't as successful as
grafting other fruits but you will increase your chance of success by covering
the whole graft with parafilm. Parafilm holds the plant's moisture in so
it doesn't dry out as quickly. The new shoot comes right out through the
parafilm. Anymore I always graft my stone fruits using parafilm or similar
material. A M Leonard has rolls of plastic material which I have used
too. Parafilm is stretchy and works very well.
Like Sam I prefer budding in the summer but most of the time if I am
getting a new variety it will be in the early spring at which time I will have
to graft.
