The same thing happens to flowers that have been
exposed to just enough cold to kill the pistil without damaging the
petals. I have been horrified to peer closely at a single
flower on lovely branches of plum blossoms, and see a little dead
black thing in the center. And another and another. The peaches are
harder to spot. It happens to Chaenomeles quince
