It really depends on how much wind you get, as well
as rootstock. In Kansas (third windiest state in the Union) you stake any
rootstocks that don't have excellent anchorage, and keep them staked until the
trees are big. Some rootstocks need staked forever. Aggressive
pruning helps keep them standing.
