I raise Enterprise. The apples are large, and
the tree is productive (on M7). The flavor is fair-to-good...certainly
edible, but not on a par with my wonderful Stayman Winesaps (if you want a
really good, large apple, plant a Stayman!!). The texture of enterprise is
very crisp; they fracture when you bite into them. They are juicy and do
not get mealy, even in storage. Their disease resistance is not as great
as claimed. Every year about 5 to 8 percent of my Enterprise apples have
scab; and the tree occasionally gets hit by fire blight, although it is
certainly very tolerant of it. The apples are highly susceptible to brown
rot, and require regular spraying of Captan to control it. The twigs are
very long, slender, and drooping, and sometimes break from the weight of the
fruit, which attains large size without thinning.
Overall, it's a good apple, and easy to raise in an
area, like mine (along the Chesapeake Bay) that has hot, humid growing seasons
and a lot of disease pressure.
