Jim,
It isn't only about plums that stores have trained their customers
poorly. Nowdays most banana bins are full of half green fruit. It
used to be that the mark of a good banana was a yellow skin with tiny
black dots indicating full development of sugar.
What made me laugh one day was a man shopping with a 9 or 10-year-old
girl - probably his granddaughter. He picked up a cluster of bananas
that were yellow with a tiny bit of green around the necks. She took
them from him and replaced them with an all-green cluster. Obviously
there was a generation in between that was brainwashing her into
buying green bananas.
