If your squirrels are stealing all of your nuts, there is a neat way to
trick those dastardly critters into providing some for you that are easy to
find. If there are only a few nuts to be had, the squirrels will hide them
so you won't find any but, if it is an abundant crop, they'll leave them
where you can find them, if you know where to look.
It helps to have a fallen tree (12" in diameter or larger) but lacking
that, bring in some (unsplit) cordwood and line them up so as to resemble a
(part of) fallen tree.
After the squirrels have filled their cache, they'll bury the rest, one
to three at a time, in holes they dig, BUT if you have a fallen tree, or a
facsimile thereof, they will stow them tightly under the log further hiding
the nuts with fallen leaves. Pull away the leaves and, voila, there are all
the nuts to be had just for scooping them up. I also find some nuts beside
large rocks or at the base of bushes, always with the nuts covered with
leaves. It works here in North Central Minnesota and I'd bet that 'your'
squirrels aren't any different from 'mine.'
