Dear fruit professionals and enthusiasts,
My partner Andy and I are aspiring farmers/orchardists about to embark on a
bicycle tour of the Eastern U.S. this summer, from North Carolina to Maine,
via an inland route. We are hoping to meet growers and land stewards of
various kinds. As permaculture enthusiasts, we are intensely interested in
perennial tree crops. This past fall and winter, we both worked at a
Minnesota orchard that grows apples, plums, peaches, apricots, raspberries,
and strawberries. We'd like to see persimmons, pawpaws, beach plums, arctic
kiwis and whatever other adventurous fruits you may have. We're also very
interested in heirloom or unique varieties of the old favorites: apples,
pears, plums, etc. Nuts--chestnuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, etc--are also on
our list of future crops.
If you are a grower who welcomes visitors we offer you some labor in
exchange for seeing your site and having some time to talk with you, and
hopefully to pitch a tent for a night or two. The states we will go through
are Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.
Rather than plugging up the listserve, contact me directly
(mcgu0139@umn.edu) if you're interested or would like more information.

P.S. For those of you who may be interested in the trip in general, we will
be creating a travel log soon at:
