I remember someone in Pomona saying that their cats
were very fond of their kiwi vines, not only hanging around them but using the
vicinity for a catbox. The writer commented that seeing as kiwis come from
areas where there are tigers, that the plants were probably protected from
herbivores. Maybe something as big as a tiger wouldn't bother with the
little plants, allowing them to get started, and the big ones could probably
stand a bit of mauling. Once their roots get deep enough, they can just
sent up another stem. That's what the wild muscadines around here seem to
do anyway. Are kiwis fond of concentrated nitrogen? That's what
they'd be getting from cat dung. Or maybe they need it in the soils where
they come from, allows them to race to the top of the canopy? Donna
