my partner has grown winter melons from seed he bought in spain (where they show up in produce markets well into april...). at the time he was growing in southern oregon, with hot dry summers and coldish winters (zone 7). he did grow outdoors, with drip irrigation, from seeds started in a greenhouse and transplanted as seedlings outside. it turns out a melon that is dark green outside with yellow under color, and pale yellowy-green flesh, about the size and shape of a crenshaw, if i am remembering right. i had never had one before, and in january, after being stored in a barn with his winter squashes, it was drippingly sweet and perfumey. well worth growing, in my opinion. if you can grow sweet, ripe watermelons, you should be able to do these. they are not the winter gourd/wax melons of asian descent. way yummier. karen oregon city,OR On Jan 16, 2008, at 8:48 PM, Donna &/or Kieran wrote:
