Plums by John H. Weinberger is a short survey of plum development
worldwide, packed with information, with a good bibliography. Here is
an excerpt:
(Burbank) imported P. salicina seedlings from Japan in 1884 and 1885.
Several selections from them were named and introduced, including
'Burbank', 'Abundance' and 'Satsuma'. Later he made crosses between
P. salicina and other species .... His 'Santa Rosa' cultivar which
contains a mixture of P. salicina, P. simonii and P. americana ....
