Hi Alan,
I think Steve's right, sometimes it's difficult to
find the right people. A fairly prominent gardening newspaper,
put out by the extension office indicated soils in our area (KS) have
plenty of available phosphorous. When I finally did a soil test, the test
came back very low in P, very surprising. I ended up putting almost
300 lbs./acre of Diammonium Phosphate and this last summer it moved the
available P up to medium, at around 20 PPM (if I remember correctly). Even
if there were no known soil problems I would still recommend a soil test.
It might reveal a low level of an essential micronutrient. It's not a lot
of money at around 20 bucks. And who knows Steve might find it's
something simple like too much Na.
