As someone said earlier, about the best apples, it
depends on where they are grown and even the cultural conditions under which
they are grown.
As to what the average consumer wants, nearly ever
fruit buyer that I know say "people buy fruit with their eyes". If it looks
good, with a bright, glossy color and it is firm, then it will
sell.
Granny Smith as grown in Central Texas, with our
long hot summers, is one of the few really crisp apples we can grow this
far south. Most of the good apples that are grown further north, when grown here
are not crisp. So, if you are in prime apple country Granny Smith is not a very
great apple but if you are in the south it is a good variety.
The best apples besides Granny Smith in this
country are "summer" apples that get ripe before it really gets hot in our
summers. Holland is one of the best of the red summer apples, here and it
is just a localized variety in central and north Texas and little known outside
our area.
