For what its worth here is Downing's entry. It looks like Hedrick
just copied from Downing.
PICQUET'S LATE.
Originated with Antoine Picquet, Bell Air, Ga. Glands reniform.
Flowers large.
Fruit large to very large, round, sometimes a little flattened and one-
sided. Skin yellow, with a red cheek. Flesh yellow, melting, sweet,
rich, and perfumed. Yery good. Freestone. Early September. (P.
J. B., MS.)
Heres another tidbit thanks to Google from the Horticulturist.
At the fruit exhibition of the Georgia State Horticultural Society,
the Picquet
Peach was classed as best, flesh vinous, highly flavored, melting,
stone small, and
fruit of a regular and very large size, and of superior quality. The
Smock and
Salway were both classed below it; and the Smock particularly, was so
much the
lowest standard of admission in point of quality, that it was denied
admission.
I have never heard of this peach in any modern collections and it may
be lost to history.
