Re root sprouts: Soil type or other conditions could make a difference.
If you cut through the roots of a plum some distance from the tree, you will
tend to get sprouts where they were cut. My sweet cherries make a few
sprouts some 10-15 feet from the tree, but there is quite a cluster of
sprouts in one area, where the cherry roots come up against the root zone of
a large oak. I haven't been digging there, so I think the oak has something
to do with it. Donna
