John,
Sounds like your leaf curl is from PLH (Potato
Leaf Hopper). The leaves cup (curl) from side to side rather than from tip
to stem. PLH feeds on the tender new growth of terminal leaves. The
leaves first begin turning yellow only around the edges beginning at the tips,
then become chlorotic and deformed (cupping upward) and slowly turn brown or
scorched, mimicking phytotoxicity. The damage is caused by a toxin
injected by PLH while feeding. PLH also occasionally causes symptoms
similar to the effects of growth regulators. PLH damage is often mistaken
for injury caused by herbicides, nutrient deficiency or over
fertilization. PLH injury may not be serious on mature trees but can
severely stunt the growth of young trees. Hope this info
helps!
