My
Jostaberry bushes are 4 years old now and producing well. I would like to compare mine to some of
the newer cultivars out there. Is anyone else in the Midwest growing any of
the new black-red currant hybrids that are available?
For those
who haven't experienced this fruit, it is tart but delicious, there are no
major pests or diseases, and they grow in my unamended clay soil like champs.
The fruit is a dark purplish black and
my guess is that its high in anthocynanins. My only complaint is that
harvest is laborious as most strigs are composed of 1-3 berries. BUt I would recommend them to
anyone needing a deciduous shrub in an edible landscape, and they are also
easily grown organically.
