I asked a similar question last June. I will forward those answers
to you. Lon was nice enough to make Rosa dumalis seeds available to
me. I cold-stratified them in the fridge and just planted them in
the seed starter a week or so ago. They're a bit leggy because even
a south-facing window isn't as good as keeping them outside. I put
them out in the sun and they're doing better.
I bought a "Wild Spice" rugosa rose last year. I've eaten a couple
of the hips and they're pretty fuzzy inside. Better than your average
rose hip and a nice size. They are beautiful to look at on the
bush. However, the Rosa dumalis, though it produces smaller hips,
has a slightly better taste.
I've heard some folks use Rosa canina for hips as well.
