Hans raised the issue of rootstocks other than
pecan(C.illinoensis) requiring a compatible interstem. It's
well-known - or, at least, anecdotally reported - that some pecan and
hickory selections are not graft-compatible with either bitternut
hickory(C.cordiformis) or bitter pecan(C.aquatica), and if a nursery
were using either of these two species as rootstocks, then an
interstem graft of, say, "Green River" pecan on bitternut would be required.
But, I find it unlikely that many commercial pecan nurseries in The
South would be using anything other than pecan seedlings as their rootstock.
