I know a good bit about donkeys. I have 8 riding donks. Trust me on this
one. Beating a donkey is not a good idea at all. Donkeys think more than
other equines because they have two choices in a scary situation. They can
run or they can freeze. They have to decide which will be best.
When I teach a donkey a new situation I go slowly and investigate it with
them. Take trailer loading. It looks like a cave..and with this metal
floor it sounds nasty..Then I go in and look around..It seems okay..I think
you could come in too..We could eat treats in here. You don't want to..Okay
we will go away and approach again.
In 15 minutes I had Little mark jumping into the trailer..going all the way
to the back. Eating bread in the trailer, getting groomed singing, jumping
out, jumping in and doing it over again. If I had taken a stick to him to
get him to load I would not have gotten him within 30 feet of that trailer
again.
In my opinion beating is for eggs and whipping cream.

Lucky didn't get the poem quite right, at least not the traditional version
from Europe. It's donkeys, wives, and walnut trees that are said to improve
from beating. I don't know much about donkeys, will pass on that part. I
suspect you can get women to work harder by beating them, but it probably
makes them a lot less fun to have around. Walnuts are prone to excessive
vegetative growth and prolonged juvenility. The approved method was to beat
them with iron chains, which should not break the bark but should reduce the
sap flow enough to slow the tree growth and encourage it to begin bearing.
