In connecticut the deer have eaten, severely, my young chestnut
trees. They nibble at the adult Dunstan Hybrids, but they mangle the
seedlings and American seedliings.
I have some Carpathian walnut trees that the deer don't bother much though
when they can they use their horns on the trunks.
They don't seem to eat the Black walnut native types.
Best of luck with small trees and deer.....advise placing very tight
electric fence BEFORE attempting plantings.
