We used to rent a house that had a huge M. alba
that made mostly male flowers but also set small fruit. Not as heavy a
crop as the female trees tend to make though. I haven't seen this
kind of thing with the native trees, and I assume Jim is NOT growing alba.
(unless some of the Russian ones Gurneys used to sell are really hardy?)
They really get whacked by freezes now and then even here.
