The bonsai club in Victoria, B.C. has a system so that their
collections are passed on to an experienced caregiver. This
arrangement needs to be in place well before the owner dies, as
bonsai often require daily care and won't survive until a will is
probated.
I know of a Pacific Coast iris breeder whose plants caught the
attention of a young neighbour, who began growing them too. When the
older man needed to go to a care home, his collection was given to
the young man, and he is carrying on with the breeding lines. I don't
think he is 30 yet, so he has a long time to continue the work.
