In case anyone was curious, the U of MN has a bunch of
'Summercrisp' crossed with various Asian pears. The trees looked to be at
least 20 years old and were fully mature. They appear to be very hardy and
the few I tasted were far superior to Summercrisp itself. If anyone is in
regular contact with Dave Bedford, the pome fruit breeder there, ask him if any
of these might be introduced soon. They might be a better bet for mass or
market planting in the North than their parents.
