Subject: [NAFEX] Non-Traditional Apples

Folks,
I just had a thought that some of you apple people might be able to
address. The various characteristics of apples differ considerably from
variety to variety. I am wondering if there are apples that are
essentially non-sweet, non-acidic? I ask because it occurred to me that
I've tried a "wild" apple or two that, with just a bit more tweaking (or
selecting), might usable as substitute for root crops such as carrots,
turnips, and/or potatoes. This could provide much of the nutrition and
texture of such crops without the neccessity of disturbing the soil
structure to obtain them. Thanks for your thoughts on this matter.
