I'm in
zone 5 on maps but Pawnee matured here two years ago and I think it was
developed in Texas.
Keith,
Most of the USDA-bred pecan selections, the majority of which are named
after native American tribes, were bred & developed at the USDA Pecan
Breeding & Genetics facility in TX. Pawnee, and its full
sibling, Creek, are the result of crossing Mohawk with Starking Hardy
Giant(which originated on George James' place near Brunswick, MO).
Even though it was bred in TX, it's a good, big pecan with a quality
kernel, for this part of the country, though it may be like its Mahan
grandparent in that it may not fill well as it gets some age on
it.
If you've not seen it before, here's the website - lots of good info,
including descriptions and nut photos of many of the good named pecan
varieties, including some of the northern/midwestern and far northern
selections.
