Does anyone grow Cornus mas in zone
3-4? I have a small plant of Cornus mas 'Aurea' which has done
well for me so far--it's about 3ft tall- and not experienced any winter
damage. The University of Wisconsin Arboretum has some large specimens
which originated from Yugoslav seed that have probably experienced almost
-40F.
A local nursery, Jung's, has bare root plans of
C. mas 'Red Star' and 'Pioneer' available for sale. I'm sure that
Jung's got the plants from One Green World, but I can't find any independent
information on their likely hardiness. They're supposed to be from the
Ukraine, which can get cold in some areas, but the Crimea, which is about a zone
20, is part of the Ukraine. Any advice on the likely hardiness of either
of the above two C. mas cultivars?
Thanks, Steve Herje, Lone Rock,
