When I read the post about using granite
dust for beetle control, I thought of Surround, but couldn’t remember the
product name. When it was first available, it wasn’t registered for
organic crops in CA. I don’t market, and I’m comfortable
using organic controls approved in other states but not allowed by the very
conservative organic overseers here. Out here we don’t really have
problems with Japanese beetles – the problems we have are with the DDT
spray used to control them. When I was a kid, there were Japanese beetle
traps everywhere in town and surrounding suburbs, and frequently county ag employess
would douse our yard with DDT. So one general question – how would
Surround compare with bagging? Seems easier, if it would be as
effective. Stephen Sadler, Ph.D. USDA 9, AHS heat zone 8, From:

Surround keeping the Japanese beetles off of plants. It's a clay product that
irritates the beetles and they won't feed on treated plants. |
