As someone with an 11 month spring, and 0, though occasionally 1
"heat days", direct seeding of heat lovers is not an option, unless
the direct seeding takes place in a greenhouse. I have a long growing
season, but it is a cool one.
I do have tomatoes which come up from dropped fruit from the previous
year. They start germinating about August, and I can't remember that
I have ever had fruit set from one of them.
Peppers produce fruit, but I have to start them in the winter, and
finally plant them out in my hottest spot sometime in June, already
in flower.
Forget the real heat lovers, like watermelon, canteloupe, okra, eggplant.
