Derry, thanks for all the budding info. Question: why did you say
"The terminal bud should not have formed on either the rootstock or the donor branch."
I come up blank on the benefits of this. (I'm not disagreeing, just saying that I don't get it.)
And Oberlin is in Ohio. Don't know where in Ohio, but weather wise, probably somewhere zone 5-ish.
