Lon, I did some more digging around the GRIN database. There is a hybrid called “Appleberry” (X Sorbaronia sorbifolia) developed by N. Stewart in New Brunswick. The database says “Fruits black, taste like an apple and very sweet”. That sounds like it has potential as an edible. The rest either don't have fruit, or it isn't palatable. The
Sorbaronia has intense red, almost black foliage. I have a
Crataegomespilus and it sets heavily, but the fruits are like pure hawthorn -
they won't "blet" like a medlar. They are edible, but not that
great unless you make jelly.
