For anyone in Wisconsin who wants to see them in their native habitat,
they grow along the north side of HWY 14 just west of Lone Rock. Also
Cactus Bluff which is across the WI River from the nude beach in
Mazomanie WI. Especially great to see them flowering.
The opuntia which is hardy to the arctic circle is Opuntia fragilis,
tiny tiny little pads (more like thumbs). I have never seen it growing
in habitat in Wisconsin but Curtis's Vegetation of Wisconsin claims
that it does grow in one place in Adams County.
