Let's put it this way:I saw something the other day from an experienced Japanese Maple propagator who indicated that a number of years back, a number of the commercial JM propagators jumped into propagating from cuttings with both feet, but about five years or so into the process, they realized that those from rooted cuttings just didn't perform nearly as well, for the most part, as those grafted onto vigorous rootstocks. So...with the exception of a few varieties, such as Bloodgood, most JMs are grafted, and even some nurseries prefer to bud/graft Bloodgood rather than trying to propagate it on its own roots.
There are NO nurseries in the United States that sell peaches self-rooted.
There was an interesting article some years ago - I can dig it up for you if you really want to know - saying that self-rooted peaches can outperform budded peaches. But when I called the professors who wrote the article they admitted no nurseries had adopted the method.
