Back in about the 50s, radiation was hoped to help breeders improve plant material. A lot of work was done at the University levels as well as amateurs.
After much expenditure of money and time that idea was discarded by must scientists. One just typically dosn't shake, rattle and roll the genes and make real imporvements. Yes, a few were made and it is still fun to play with but mostly a waste of time. Made some funny looking vegitables though. But go for it.
