Jim,
No irrigation... interesting. Do you add any fertilizer to your blueberry
patch?

Every couple years I put a ring of pine shavings/sawdust (from a cabinet
maker who works primarily in pine) around each blueberry bush. About 2-3
inches thick and from up-against-the-canes out about 18 inches. This seems
to suppress most grasses, maintain moisture in late summer, and feed the
bushes with whatever they like. I do not know if it is acidic. Takes a
couple years to decompose. Since I started doing this 8 years ago, the
bushes require severe pruning twice a year to keep them under 7 1/2 feet in
height, and we get bumper crops of large berries. The bushes are located
in full sun, flat ground on top of a broad clay ridge, no irrigation, 15
miles west of Winston-Salem, NC.
Our local Extension Agent suggested the pine sawdust regimen.
