I have seen, even in early Sept., damage on trunks which many might blame on
rabbits. LOOKS like rabbit damage, but is actually meadow vole damage.
It's definitely m.v. damage if the feeding site is close to the ground and
sheltered or slightly buried by long grass, leaves, etc. I've also know
voles or mice (not sure which) to burrow into pots of plants which were
planned for over-wintering... but not after 90% or the roots were eaten !

Subject: [NAFEX] Rabbits?
Date: Wed, 01 Oct 2003 08:07:53 -0400
Hello,
At what point in the season do rabbits start in on dormant plants?
I have some young grape vines on trellis, and cannot add any protection
until leaf drop (soon I
hope). They are still young enough not to have reached the top wire yet.
I already have wrapped the rest of my tree trunks, and will wrap the vines
once leaf drop, but I
wonder when the rabbits will really kick in on dormant, unprotected plants.
Thanks,
Tom
